Lane County Tourism Grant:
New Buoys for the Race Course

Thanks to a Tourism Grant from Lane County for $3,500, the Oregon Association of Rowers (OAR) has completed the first step in its goal to host a championship regatta at Dexter Lake. The grant has allowed us to purchase and install 30 large yellow buoys that will mark the outline of the
race course this year—and in the years to come. As we continue working towards the fully buoyed course, these inflatable, low impact yellow buoys will continue to mark the 250 meter distance points of the 2,000 meter race course.

OAR’s long-term goal of constructing a 2,000 meter, seven lane, fully buoyed race course will provide one more high level regatta site to the northwest rowing community. Locally, it will bring many more rowers and visitors to Lane County, and boost the economies of Lowell, Springfield and Eugene. The cost associated with the miles of steel cable, anchoring systems, hardware and thousands of small lane buoys is very high so we plan to take small steps in reaching that goal.

OAR and Lane County complete upgrades to the
Lowell Park Rowing Dock

OAR, using a combination of club funds and a Lane County Tourism Special Projects Grant, performed fabrication and construction work at the dock including upgrades to the dock attachment to the shore, strengthening and lengthening of the ramp, and removing a tripping hazard.  Local contractor Rainbow Valley Design and Construction performed the work in a one-day shutdown on December 21, 2004.  The improvements will enhance safety and usability of this public rowing dock for years to come.  A project report, complete with photographs can be seen here.
